As always, the Barcelona-based technology show is a launch platform for a host of new mobile devices.
Wireless carrier Alcatel may not have the brand name appeal of an HP or Lenovo, but it hoped to make a splash at this week’s Mobile World Congress just like those better-known companies. It’s looking to go upscale with its new Idol 4 Android smartphones, and it’s hoping to tap into the surging 2-in-1 device market with its Plus 10 tablet.
Unlike its Idol phones, however, Alcatel has chosen Windows 10 to power the Plus 10, which comes equipped with a 10.1-inch display that sports a typical resolution of 1,280×800. Other specs, according to The Verge, are likewise nothing special: Intel quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage, and 8 hours of battery life.
But the Plus 10’s versatility may be its biggest selling point, as like other 2-in-1 tablets, it offers multiple operating modes. In addition to tablet and laptop modes, you can flip the screen in the detachable keyboard dock for viewing of slide presentations or video content. That keyboard also has a unique feature: It is LTE-enabled and can serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 15 other devices.
Unfortunately for North American readers, this LTE-equipped 2-in-1 won’t be available to use as a hotspot, unless you find one traveling abroad. The Plus 10 will be sold in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and South America starting in June, though no pricing information has been provided by Alcatel.
