Well its rumored that Amazon is coming out with a color ebook reader in the second half of the year 2012. As reported by Digitimes the new models will use the multitouch capacitive panels.
Amazon’s new color e-book readers will be built with multi-touch capacitive touch panels instead of infrared touch panels used in the previous mono-color e-book readers, the sources noted.
E Ink Holdings also plans to unveil color EPD products soon, according to company chairman Scott Liu. The color EPD products are likely to be adopted by Amazon, indicated the sources.
Touch panel maker TPK Holding reportedly has landed touch module orders for Amazon’s color e-book readers, the sources added.
Amazon is expected to ship six million e-book readers in 2012, estimated the sources. Read more here…
We’ve been looking for the E Ink for a couple of years now. There has been a problem with the Triton technology which was the color saturation. This is what Jeff Bezos said in an interview with Consumer Reports.
He indicated that color-screen Amazon device that uses an energy-frugal technology such as E Ink (used in the monochrome Kindle) isn’t imminent: Color E Ink “is not ready for prime time…the colors are very pale.” But he added that “it continues to be improved” and “it makes a lot of sense for there to be a low-power, reflective color display. I think that’s something you could build a fantastic product around.”

As we know this is a rumor but if its as true as they say the Kindle would move up to a full scale tablet. The problem with the gray scale ereaders now is that magazines are hard to sell. I think Amazon knows this and is pushing toward digital zines and you never know maybe textbooks.
